Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,750 kilometres east of Australia.  Port Vila H3 was founded by Malcolm 'Tooth' Cooper in 1976 and runs on Mondays, ’female visiting Hashers encourage, kids barely tolerated’.  Runs are usually in the countryside (i.e. bush) with occasional town runs. However the island is extremely small and covered in volcanic rock making laying trails extremely difficult. Many runs are therefore a token jog to the barbeque site.

The Harrietts kennel was founded by Mary McGoon in March 1983 and has smaller packs.  Santo H3 was restarted by Mark 'Hash Poofta’ Stafford in September 1999 after the old kennel had been defunct for a decade. It claims to be the smallest hash in the world with 4 the record for the smallest pack and never more than 10 at any run. However when Higgins visited recently there was a respectable pack of 25. Ex-pats on the island tend to be senior managers in charge of the bank, the airport or holding an important position in the government.

Updated

Vaseline Thighs

Graham ‘Vaseline Thighs’ Jelley was the 2009 GM of the Taichung Hash at which time he was rapidly approaching his 500th run with the kennel.

Vatican

The Holy Smoke H3 was founded to run in and around the Vatican on nights of full moons and was always closely linked with the Rome Hash.

It is uncertain how many runs they completed but it is no  longer active.

Venezuela

Venezuela is a strange place, a country that combines oil riches with terrible poverty and – amazingly for South America – prefers baseball to soccer.

Few South American hashes have the international reputation of Caracas H3, a kennel founded by Max Watts in June 1983.  Another of the founding fathers, David ‘El Padrino’ Punchard is still a regular visitor.

Today Caracas is a family orientated hash, meeting twice a month on Sunday afternoons with regular weekend trips to take advantage of the Venezuelan beaches and mountains. The pack is a mixture of Venezuelan nationals and ex-pats, the latter coming mainly from the USA, Canada, Europe and other Latin American countries.

Maracino H3 (close to the Colombian border) was founded in November 1994 and runs every other Saturday.

Avila H3 is the latest hash addition. It was founded in December 2003 by Dexter ‘Winger’ Jadrine, Jeanine ‘Hash Mama’ Abraham and Roberto ‘Canchucuflorida’ Fontna (all ex Trinidad) and hashes every other Sunday.

VD Viking

Bjorn ‘VD Viking’ Pedersen (he is actually a Swede who choose to become a Dane) started hashing in Pattaya in the nineties and then moved on to Subic Bay before returning to Scandinavia.

He was founder of the Kalmar H3, but returned to Stockholm to act as joint RA at Interscandic 2005

Verity, Chris

Chris Verity made a major contribution to Mother Hash, serving as secretary from 1956-57 and as Joint Master in 1958.  He was behind a recruitment drive that probably saved the hash from extinction.  He later helped to get hashing started in Singapore

Viagra

With all the fuss over the world’s first ‘Erectile Dysfunction Medication’ it was bound to become a hash name.  There are Viagra’s in New Zealand, Cameroon and Guantanamo Bay (which must frighten the prisoners).

Vigara, then of Dar es Salaam H3, once set a hash from the Viagra Inn.

Viagra
Daniel ‘Viagra’ Tiagueu is a water engineer who was introduced to hashing in his home country of Cameroon in 1988.  He now tops the Yaounde H3 run list with 450 plus runs, having hared over 50 of those. He served as GM in 1993.

The Vicar

Mike ‘The Vicar’ Younger is a key figure and long time GM on the Oslo Hash.

Vietnam

An American general once pointed out to a Vietnamese counterpart that the USA had never been beaten in any battle and the Vietnamese general said, ‘so what?’  Today the reverse is true. Vietnam defeated the French, North Vietnam defeated the USA and the corrupt southern government, but so what?

Thirty years later fizzy drinks and fast food restaurants are taking over the place anyway.

And, along with the western business, came hashing, which seems to be thriving.  Not only do the city hashes attract good-sized packs, but a few hashes are opening up in the regions.  A Nash Hash started in 2004 and Vietnam was a co-host at InterHash 2006, Chiang Mai. How times have changed!

Magic believed that a Hanoi Hash might have been active around 1983 but upset the authorities and was banned for being ‘a traffic danger’. The first hash in Vietnam hash that we can be certain was the Bai Bang H3, a small pack of Swedes based at a paper mill who, around 1984, put on a few runs noted for Swedish beer and saunas.  Hashing got off to a more conventional start in Ho Chi Minh City (often still politically incorrectly referred to as Saigon) in August 1990. Grevil ‘Grovel’ Sharp and Jacqueline ‘Goldilocks’ Gouclh, just out of the very vibrant Beijing Hash, joined a couple of local ex-pats for a drink, which ended in the founding of the Ho Chi Minh H3. The first trail was from the BP staff house and although it is uncertain exactly how many turned up, they consumed about 15 crates of beer at a party which lasted until about 3 am.

In those days things were far from easy. A Hasheet of 1992 suggested that ‘We always seem to see unexploded ordinance around the area. While it is hashing etiquette to call out 'hole' or ‘barbed wire’... we should also frequently call out ‘bomb’ so hashers won't step on one while running by.’  In addition the authorities were not used to foreigners appearing in the countryside and there were numerous ‘arrests’ with the first recorded incident in August 1992 when the pack was arrested and ‘held for over an hour until the Captain got through to someone important on a Hasher's mobile phone.’

The following year a drunken farmer ‘possible secret policeman’ fired three shots and ‘arrested’ the pack.  It ended ‘after an exchange of cigarettes and pocket change and signing a statement saying the incident never happened’.

Such incidents were more likely to involve the hares, rather than the pack and were generally  good-natured and ended with the payment of a small bribe/gift/fine.  The following quote is from one of the best pieces of hash literature which I have come across:

New Year's Eve Hash 2000: 2 hares arrested (and face) 6 hours of brutal interrogation: "We are officers of the Vietnamese Army, we will not beat you but you must answer our questions: What is your favourite colour? Do you like to cook? Would you like us to cook for you? Do you find that the harmony of a marriage is enhanced when the wife contributes to family earnings by working outside of the home?"

As was inevitable, the emotionally exhausted and broken hares finally agreed to visit the base commander's home near Hanoi for the next village festival and to go cafe-hopping with some of the officers next time they made a field-trip to HCMC.  After Tickler corrected the (hand)-written report of our arrest -- and the official photographer was finally located so that we could have a group photo -- the terrifying ordeal drew to a close.”

As Vietnam opened up to the world such incidents become rarer, and the last record of any arrests was in 2000. Also it became less necessary to bow to political correctness and the kennel became  increasingly referred to as the Ho Chi Minh-Siagon H3. Some where along the line the Ho Chi Minh bit was dropped and today t-shirts and the website refer simply to Siagon H3.

While Saigon is a massive and thriving city, up in the north Hanoi has a very different feel, being quieter, more serious and stuck in a bit of a time warp. The present Hanoi H3 was founded in October 1991 by Terry ‘Testicles’ Taikleas (ex Capital H3).  Hanoi now offers family runs within an hour of Hanoi. The bus leaves from the Spotted Cow Bar and the pack usually numbers between 50 and 80.  There is also a Hanoi Hash House Harriettes (founded 1996) meeting every other Tuesday evening.  Packs of 20 run in town, trying to avoid the big streets.  Over on the north coast Haiphong H3 runs once a month, usually on the 3rd Saturday.  Half way down the coast, Da Nang H3 offers hour long runs on every second Saturday.  It was Da Nang H3 which started the first Nash Hash in May 2004.

Vung Tau City H3 is based in Saigon’s sea resort town and was founded in 1992 by John ‘Anchor’ Murt (ex Saigon) and runs every other Saturday from the Sea Breeze Hotel.

Vincent, John

John was On-Sec of Mother Hash when Singapore wrote for advice on setting up a kennel.  His reply, something like  ‘I dunno. Do what the hell you like. Nothing to do with us’  displayed marvellous common sense and set the tone for the independent and lay back nature of world hashing today.

Vineyard Hash

Vineyard H3 is perhaps best considered a sub-kennel of Frankfurt H3 that organises two Vineyard hashes each year, one in spring and one in autumn.  These are usually in Germany but might cross the border occasionally.

The originator, GM and guiding light of the Vineyard Hash is Automatic Balls. Through a friend he organised a run around the local vineyards at Bechtheim and, considering this a success, consulted with the then Frankfurt GM, The Wolf, about making it a regular event.

As of November 2007 twelve Vineyard Hash has followed, with AB considering the one of the best being the four day river cruise in 2005.

Virgin – hash name

There are many variations of ‘Virgin’ as a hash name including Virgin Captain, Virgin Cracker, Virgin Dick and so on.

Virgins

A virgin in hash terms is somebody who has never hashed before.  Some hashes include visitors who are hashing for the first time with their kennel.

Virgin Lay

New hashes setting their first trail.

Voice, Tony

Mother hasher in the fifties or sixties. Tony was commissioner of police in Johor and would run with a squad of police officers cutting away the secondary jungle to clear a path for him.
