Okinawa
Okinawa comprises of a chain of islands of which Okinawa Island is the
biggest. After the Second World War the islands were placed
under US Administration Dail ‘Jock’ Trader founded Okinawa H3 here in 1980 after an earlier Naha H3 had failed to get established. There is still a large US military presence on the island, which has traditionally provided the core of the local kennels. The military authorities wield considerable – almost medieval - power, which can create problems. See Japan section for more details below Okinawa incidents

An army captain hared a run that disturbed a general’s game of golf. Ordered to report to his commanding officer, he turned up with several hashers, including a Japanese colonel, and the matter was dropped. (Reported May 2004)

Okinawa Incident (2) A marine was thrown out of the corps for his behaviour, which the military tried to link to the hash. (There seems to have been some adulterous shagging on what may, or may not, have been a recce for a future run). For a few days it seemed that the military might even have enough influence to close the hash down, but Okinawa H3 survived and a few weeks later the website had a picture of their recent Red Dress Run with the caption, ‘Look Mum, No Marines’.

Munich H3 organizes a hash weekend to coincide with the famous beer festival. Despite the name it is actually held in September. This is not hash mismanagement but the result of a 19th century decision to move the beer festival back, to take advantage of better autumn weather. Hash participation in the fest dates to 1993 and it is, as you would expect, a great three-day piss up.

Old WaresWes ‘Old Wares’ Carter was a KL hasher in the early sixties and from there went on to finish his hash career in Perth.
|
Oliver, M.S.Oliver was an early post war hasher, having his first run with Mother Hash in 1947. He went on to become Joint Master in 1949 and again in 1956. In 1965 he was co-founder of Ipoh H3.

Oman is a great place
to hash, with
some stunning mountain and desert scenery and a beaut Muscat H3 was founded by Johnny ‘Condom’ Johnson in September 1976 and hosted Gulf InterHash in 2004. Jebel H3, founded by Gary ‘Animal’ Joyer and John ‘Invisible Man’ Jarman on 24th August 1985, attracts mixed packs of 60. It is uncertain whether Salalah H3 (founded 1992) is still running but Sohar, on the northern road to UAE (United Arab Emirates), has had a kennel since 2006.

Sometimes called to indicate a back check or false trail, or in fact any situation that requires going back the way you have just run (i.e. coming across an angry bull). One of the main purposes of shouting ‘on back’ is to save the slow runners coming up behind from running an unnecessary stretch of trail. It can also be a call to anybody in front who is going in the wrong direction.
The last stretch of a run. Can be a mark on the ground, which should (but doesn’t always) mean you are close to the finish. Can also be a call, either responding to that mark, or perhaps from the runners recognizing where they are and realising the end is in sight.
On In (2) The cry On In an also be an “invitation” to enter the circle!
On on! The standard cry of the hash, which usually means you are on trail. It can however be relayed, i.e. you have heard the call of ‘on on’ from somebody else and although not on the trail yourself, are passing on the news. Care needs to be taken here, otherwise those in front of you might turn around and head back towards you! It is therefore perhaps better to call ‘On called’. ‘On on’ might also be used by stragglers who have been left miles behind and who, having not seen any marks for 2 hours, are just trying to keep together.
On, On (2) On on can also be used as a Masonic call to introduced yourself to strangers. For example if you see somebody at an airport wearing a hash t-shirt.
On, On (3) A social drink after the down-downs.
On, On (4) If called when leaving the hash and can be translated as ‘goodbye’.
On, On (5) A Shakespearian line: ‘On on you noblest English’. (Henry IV)
On, On (6) A new hash magazine published in America in 2009 with 'Bartfly' as editor. Got very good reviews and at $19.95 for 6 issues is a bargain.
On On OnSocial eating and drinking after the On On!
On OutCalled on leaving as in ‘good-bye’ although is probably more common just to call ‘on on’.
On PaperThe usual cry (of relief) when the paper is re-located after losing the trial.
On Sec (On Sex)Abbreviation for the position of Honorary Secretary. Traditionally this was the top position in any kennel and that is this still the case with Mother Hash. However, as there is usually relatively little paper work involved in running a hash, the post of On-sec has declined in many kennels and may not even exist, the leadership role and duties being taken over by the GM.
On UpA cry when approaching a hill, stairs, or some other vertical obstacle. |

Oral Sex Glenda ‘Oral Sex’ Dominish is a retail centre manager and a member of the Brisbane Thirsty Hash. Before coming to Brisbane she was founder and GM of Darwin Harriettes and also ran with Sydney Harriettes. She has completed approximately 1200 runs since 1978 and won the Fiji Women’s Marathon whilst breast-feeding her baby daughter! |
Out TrailThe trial leading out from the start point. Hares might say something like ‘the out trail is over there’ but they could be telling lies. It is not a term that is widely used, often being replaced by more general expressions such as ‘it’s on-on that way’.
