In June 1986 the South Side Hash went on-on to the Lamma Hilton, where they celebrated the imminent departure of ‘Sheepshagger’. Towards the end of the evening, with the restaurant emptying out, some of the lads had started dropping their shorts. One of the remaining guests complained of such behaviour via the letter page of the South China Morning Post, signing herself ‘Disgusted’. She seemed to know the hashers, as she pointed out that the group included a headmaster and a banker. In reflection the reply the hash sent, while attempting to be comical, actually verged on the arrogant and it brought a stream of negative comments. One letter pointed out that laws had been broken and that the gentleman who had identified themselves by signing the reply should now be interviewed by the police. Several letters also drew attention to the double standards, ex-pats in Hong Kong feeling they could get away with behaviour which young Chinese boys would be arrested for. Some of the other Hong Kong kennels also wrote distancing themselves from the South Side. |
LatviaRiga Beerslayers H3 was founded by ‘Bald Eagle’ in September 2000 and run every other Sunday. It is difficult to find any recent information about the kennel.

Lebanon is great hash territory and the close proximity of hills and sea provides endless possibilities for trails. The original Beirut Hash collapsed during the long civil war, but peace brought an influx of ex-pats working on construction projects, most notably the rebuilding of the old downtown area. This was a golden spell for the hash, with large packs and lively circles. Sadly rifts begun to develop, including an ex-pat RA who had a tendency to ignore the Lebanese runners. The final argument appears to be over two men dropping their shorts to sit on ice. The family orientated members split and the Greater Beirut H3 and the Tarboush H3 went their separate ways. A few runners, most notably Rita ‘Pump Me’ Wakim, were sensible enough to run on both groups, thus keeping ties open between the two kennels.
With
Lebanon getting back on its feet the ex-pats started to be called home
and numbers were no longer su Today Tarboush H3 offers the standard fair of beer and circle with a core of the pack going on-on to a restaurant and a few bars. They claim to have run just about everywhere in this relatively small country, except areas of the south which are still dangerous from mines. The main event of the year is the popular Snow Hash which brings in a number of visitors. The Israel invasion brought a temporary - but only temporary - halt to hashing. Right - New year Run 2005

Lee, CecilCecil Lee, an accountant, was posted to KL in 1934, and became one of the most important figures in the founding of Mother Hash. He was Joint Master from 1938-40 and was probably involved in selecting the ‘Hash House’ name. Having survived the horrors of working on the Siam- Burma railway, Lee was one of first of the old group to return to KL and he played a major role in getting Mother Hash restarted. He had a second spell as Joint Master from 1946-47 and held the post for a third time from1950-51. Except for a three-year period, Lee stayed in Malaysia until 1961 when he retired to Surrey. He was out walking one afternoon when to his amazement he heard cries of ‘On-On’ and the Surrey Hash ran past. Once Lee and hashing had rediscovered each other he gave several interviews that have made a vital contribution to our knowledge of early hash history.

Monrovia H3 runs every Saturday at 5pm and the last Sunday of the month at 11am when they do an 'outstation' run outside of Monrovia. The runs are usually flat (due to topography of the area of course) and are on or near the beach and often go through little villages that surround Monrovia. About 20-30 hashers turn up each week with up to 50 for the Sunday runs and there is a healthy 50/50 mix between local and international hashers. Fees are US$5 on Saturdays which includes beer and US$10 on Sundays which includes beer and food. A website should be online shortly. Updated July 2009 with special thanks to Haredale. |
Libya was once a strong centre of hashing, with the Benghazi H3 starting things rolling in July 1982. At its peak this kennel could attract packs of 70 to 80 runners. The air raids of 1986 caused them to miss a couple of runs, but they kept going through the UN sanctions, although with greatly reduced numbers. The country is now bouncing back and Benghazi H3 has 1000 runs plus to their credit and attract packs of 20 plus for their desert runs. Tripoli H3 ‘The Desert Rats’ is a Friday Family Hash ‘but reflecting the culture, mainly male’. Both Hashes take care to only drink in private.

The odds of being struck by lightning are remote, but of course they increase considerably if you are hashing through rice paddies in the middle of a tropical thunderstorm. During the rainy season in South East Asia every run seems to be heralded with claps of thunder and earth splitting bolts of lightening, yet even so, accidents remain rare. The most famous incident occurred in January 1988, when Casuarina H3 had ten members of the pack thrown off their feet. Several suffered minor burns and ‘one was knocked unconscious and stopped breathing for a while.’ Source: Brisbane Courier Mail

The extremely tall, extremely computer literate Likk’mm (you show them to me and I’ll lick em’) is well known on the European circuit, well-travelled InterHashionally and a legend in his adopted home of Switzerland. Present at every Interscandic event and webmaster at InterHash 2002.

Frank ‘Lilly von Stupp’ Maginsky is RA of the Hamburg Hash and at one point was captain of a rather expensive mine hunter belonging to the German navy. (He actually had a H3 sticker below the sign saying ‘Captain’ on his cabin door!) Learnt his hashing in the States where he was named after the blond bombshell in Blazing Saddles.

‘Long John’ is a bridge constructor by profession and a hasher by choice. He started hashing in the early 80’s with La Jolla and then moved to San Francisco, where he hashes with whatever group is easiest. He is also a noted traveller, often appearing at the major European events. A man of many surprises, he can spend most of the evening semi-comatose (you check not so much that he is awake, but alive) then around midnight is likely to get up and join the band – Long John is a talented soul singer and harmonica player.

Longley, W.B.Brian Longley served as Joint Master of Mother Hash in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955.

Chris ‘The Lord’ Eden run with Penang in 1965, although only as a short-term visitor. He then returned to Australia in 1967, where he founded Hobart H3. By 2001 he had completed 1,700 plus runs with them. In 1995 Magic acknowledged his 241 consecutive runs (December 31 1990 to May 1995) to be a Hash World Record.

Lord Krishna New entry Sashi ‘Lord Krishna’ Varma was the founder of Chennai H3 and served on the Goa Interhash 2002 Committee. His notable contribution to that event was the pre-ramble named Interhash Yatra Down South. This consisted of travelling by train from Chennai to Goa, with a run in Chennai, a pub crawl in Bangalore; and a second run in Mysore. The later event could not be held due to water riots, resulting in two runs in Chennai. With thanks Rail Jerk |
Lost on trailHashers do get lost on trail. Coming home in the dark, an hour after the pack is not really being lost. Not finding the pack at all and being out all night is being lost. This is predominantly a rural problem, but it can happen in cities. The author got lost on a Tokyo H3 city run, failed to find the on-on venue and had to walk home 10 miles and reclaim his clothes and wallet the following day. It is certainly worth checking where you are going for the Down-Downs, particularly if you are a visitor, and many experienced city hashers carry their mobile phones and taxi fare with them just in case. Getting lost in the jungle is more serious and there have been sufficient number of hashers being out all night, particularly in Malaysia and Brunei. The most dramatic incident was Mother Hash Run Number 1272. See Mother Hash Run 1272. The InterHash record for getting lost probably occurred on the 1980 Ball Breaker run in Kula Lumpur, where two Jakarta Hashers had to be recovered from the palm oil plantation at about 9.00 pm.

LoudLoud started hashing in Fiji, from where he fondly remembers being voted Asshole of the Month. After just a few days back in New Zealand he was roped in to help organize Nash Hash in Wellington, and the New Zealand GM'ship followed. During his year in office he ‘attended about 97% of all clubs registered at the time’.

Roy ‘Lofty’ McManus was Trail Master at InterHash Goa 2002, which was no mean feat given he usually lives in Perth, Australia. Lofty usually runs with South of Perth H3 under the close supervision of his wife and hashing soulmate, Yo Adrian.
