Earlham College New entry Earlham College is a liberal arts college with approximately 1200 students most of whom live on-campus and stay around at the weekends. It is a Quaker school, which gives it a unique atmosphere. For example, the college is officially dry but in practise ‘is fairly moist’. Sex happens, despite what the school management would like and sport is more for fun than winning. ‘In sports, the school is pathetic. Every team has a losing season almost every year, but that doesn't matter to most students.’ Earlham even have their own Hash House Harriers kennel that has been running since 1989. Described as ‘a weekly drinking party in the woods’ visiting hashers have described them as the Galapagos of hashes, because they run in such isolation that they have evolved into something not quite like hashing anywhere else in the world! The school management disprove of the group, ‘The Campus Safety and Security office and Student Development office share concern about the event and do not condone its happening’ but it carries on anyway. In 2004 the Earlham hash made headlines when a popular young runner died on trail. See Billy Palinski

Easy RiderAlan “Easy Rider” Rider is a veteran of Hobart H3, and has been running with them since 1967. As a youth he was a talented Aussie Rules football player and his conversion to Hashing was unexpected and unpopular with the island’s footy fans. Perhaps his most famous single act was rolling over the mini bus containing a large proportion of the Hobart InterHash committee.
Mattie ‘Eau Naturel’ Jackson started hashing in New Zealand in 1996. Since then her work as a teacher has enabled her to move around the world and she has hashed with Calgary H3, West London H3, and is now in the Netherlands. She has been active on the committees wherever she hashes and is co-founder of the rather notorious DIVA H3. Eau Naturel’ ‘anticipates a long Hash career ahead of me...no plans for retirement yet.’

On 11 August 1999 Chris 'Spoons' Dennis organized the Truro H3s total eclipse Hash. It was not the first eclipse hash, Magic had held such an event in Thailand, while Munich H3 and Bern H3 also hashed that day. However for some reason it is Truro that seems to have become the ’semi official’ eclipse hash, leading to the formation of the Hemispherical Umbral Shadow Hash House Harriers.

EcuadorQuito H3 is one of South America’s premier hashes. Founded in 1986 by Alan Fernie, with help from Anne Grove-Smith and Phil Townsend, they run in and around the capital. Although not as high as La Paz, at 2850 meters Quito has sufficient height to get visiting runners panting. The Quito Hash also occasionally head up some nearby mountain such as Chimbarazo (17,225 meters) in attempts to defend or regain the 'highest ever hash' record. Adrian Hromiak founded Cairo H3 in 1981. They run on Fridays, when Cairo’s’ horrendous traffic is more bearable. City runs are discouraged, and the hashers tend to head east for the wadies, or west to the farmland and pyramid fields. Packs usually number 30 plus and there are a fair number of locals, usually Egyptian men working for ex-pat companies. Cairo H3 has always been active in supporting local events, such as the Nile Raft Race. There has always been a tradition of ‘making a day of it’ with some morning activity – horse riding is popular – followed by buffet breakfast and then an afternoon Hash. The Heliopolis Atomic Breakfast H3 (formally the Heliopolis Hellraisers H3) have expanded on this theme and are a strangely parasitic group, having their own morning run, followed by a giant breakfast and then joining the main Hash for the down-downs. Delta H3 are based in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. They were founded in 1984 by Angus and Shelagh McComiskey, who had been posted up from Cairo. The first run attracted 15 but numbers fell as low as 3. The success of the 100th run, which attracted a small party from Cairo, proved to be a turning point. Egypt as a nation is unsure if it wants to be part of Africa, the Middle East or the Mediterranean world and this reflects in the hash, with Egyptian hashers showing little interest in regional events.

The great man always looked like he should have been a hasher. Look at the hair, or all that gibberish about E=mc2 which nobody else could understand. Was the guy permanently pissed? Although he himself never hashed, Einstein has at least lent his name to several hashers. There is an Einstein listed in Denmark, an Einstein's Stupid Bitch with Truro and an E=mycocksquared.

El SalvadorPeter Croenendyke and David Rodgers founded the Salvadoran H3 on August 1984. With the out break of civil war and a real fear of terrorism the hash had to shut down, only to be restarted in September 1987. The resurrected group celebrated their 50th run in May 1988 before safety concerns once more brought a temporary end to hashing: ‘Try running looking for clues while avoiding snipers.’ They got off the ground for a third time in 1993 (founding father Olivier ‘Black Peter’ Van Lieshout) as the ‘Born Again Salvadoran Hash’. This reincarnation lasted about two years. The current (4th) version of the ESH3 was re-re-founded in 1998 by Jeff ‘Grapes of Wrath’ Jacobson, with the first run in October attracting 11 runners. They now meet every second Saturday ‘inclement weather, hurricanes, flood, hail, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tornados, tsunamis or any other natural disasters, as well as war, strikes, and similar wimpish excuses, are not considered valid reasons for cancellation’. There are occasional runs out of town, usually by the beach, and most hashers use the pub at the British Club.

EnglandEngland could make a good claim to be the true home of hashing. The paper chase, from which hashing directly evolves, is without doubt an English invention. (see Hare and Hounds). In addition Mother Hash was founded by a core of Brits, who brought not only an interest in running, but also the ‘let’s all be silly buggers’ attitude that is the result of the British education system. Yet, in the UK, paper chasing never took on the social, non-competitive nature that is central to hashing. Indeed, by the early sixties the paper chase had virtually died out, to be replaced by a culture of competitive road and cross-country running. It needed returning ex-pats to bring Hashing to English shores and it was servicemen who first broke the ground.

The Tallinn 250th weekend Hashing took some time to follow glasnost to the Baltic state of Estonia, with Tallinn H3 being founded by Bob ‘G-String’ Filby and Mike ‘Axe Murderer’ Tulley on Halloween 1999. They stage Sundays (winter) and Tuesdays (summer) runs, meeting in front of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. They proudly claim to be ‘the small but low quality Hash’ with packs of around 15-20. They celebrated their 250th run in 2004. 'G String' leads the all time run list closely followed by 'Jailbait'. 'Stains the Couch' was GM at time of writing.

Ethel the AardvarkEthel the Aardvark, known by his mother as Andrew Osborn, arrived in Istanbul in 1992 on a six week contract, met a woman and now (12+ years later) is still in Istanbul with a couple of houses and 2 kids. His contribution to the Istanbul H3 includes two spells as GM and immeasurable down-downs. (Nominated by Stuart 'Canny Lingus' James).

EthiopiaAddis Ababa H3 is the 5th oldest Hash in Africa, and also the highest – the Ethiopian capital lies around 3000 metres, and depending which hills the trail heads up, you can climb a fair bit above that. They were founded in December 1981 by a group of ex-pats living in the city, including several teachers from the Sanford English Community School. William Petts is credited as the actual founder and he served as GM between 1981and 1984.
Runs are every Saturday afternoon, meeting at
During more troubled times it was dangerous for locals to mix with foreigners (dangerous as in the locals being visited by the secret police in the middle of the night and never being seen again) but in these happier times a good part of the 60 strong pack are Ethiopians.

Staged every two years, the EuroHash over came a rather shaky start to become one of the great events on the hash calendar.

Chris ‘Euroman’ Bell was chairman of the Madrid EuroHash. Has also been known as Clanger and Ding Dong.

Evans, TonyTony Evans was one of the Kiwi contingent with Kota Kinabalu Hash in the early '70s and went on to become a New Zealand Hash legend. He was responsible for putting houseguest Brett Beastie in touch with John Kendrick, thus setting the Wellington Hash in motion. A little later, and after some procrastination, he himself founded the Rotorua H3. Evans was also the first New Zealand GM, a position he held from 1980-81.

Ex LaxOn March 31, 1991, which happened to be an Easter Sunday, Ex Lax collapsed on the hash and died. He was brought around by CPR and taken to hospital where he later had bypass surgery. He recovered, returned to hashing and has now completed 13 years of running since resurrection and so is ‘the only Hasher I am aware who has died on a Hash and returned to Hash again.’ Source: Sherpa Ashland Hash House Harriers
