Dag 'Daggy' Guest, also known as the 'Horrible Hobbit' has been a central figure in New Zealand hashing for many years. He started hashing in Cairns while in the Royal Navy, later joining Christchurch H3 and becoming co-founder of Garden City H3. His hash career also involved a spell as GM of Malborough H3 when they had the reputation of 'out singing out drinking out grossing and out running' any other hash. He served as New Zealand GM between 1987 and 1989 and was involved in the unsuccessful New Zealand bids for Interhash '90 and '92.

Dancing DanDan Schlesinger was born in New York in 1955. He first came to attention as a runner in his first year at Yale, when he set a college freshman record for six miles. Considering that Olympic medallist Frank Shorter had set the previous record, this was a remarkable achievement. However Dan’s college running career never fulfilled its potential, partly he suggested later, because of pressure from his studies. An outstanding student of oriental languages – he speaks both Korean and Japanese - he was awarded a Marshall Scholarship and spent 1980-82 at Oxford University. From England he moved to Korea where he worked as translator of Korean legal documents. Dan was now running seriously once again and as part of his training regularly turned out with Seoul H3. He is still remembered in Seoul for jogging out to the venue, usually some distance away in the suburbs, before running the actually Hash. Despite taking his running so seriously Dan was adopted by the pack and was given the Hash name ‘Dancing Dan’. He in turn never let his training interfere with the fun of the circle and Captain Marvel reports that when he first came to the Hash ‘Dancing Dan couldn't chug a beer to save his life, ‘but soon we had him swilling them out of our ceremonial bedpan right along with the best of them’. Dancing Dan returning to the States sometime in 1982 and entered that year’s New York Marathon, finishing a surprise third place in a world-class time of 2 hour 11 minute 36 seconds. This is certainly the finest running feat ever recorded by an active Hasher. Four years later he was 9th in the Boston Marathon in 2:16:29. Dan now returned to school, this time to Harvard to train as a lawyer and by 1995 he was working as an attorney in Japan. During the second half of the nineties he started to build a reputation as an artist and became a cult figure in Japan when selected to design the front covers of the Japanese editions of the Harry Potter novels. Japanese art fans have a Dan Schlesinger fan club at www.i-sozo.co.jp/dan/01mesage/index.html With thanks to Captain Marvel and Hops |

Dances with WolvesIn reflection an egotistical, crap movie in which Kevin Costner tried to show the world what a hero he was. It was a good title however, and has been used by several hashers, such as ‘Dancing with Dogs’ and ‘Dances with Kerbs’. 'Dances With Trams' of Munich H3 received the name after having a near death collision with one while hashing. |

Davidson, LlewAfter a few years working on rubber plantations, Llew Davidson was transferred to KL and joined the Hash just before their 100th run. During the war he was captured by the Japanese, and spent time in Changi Prison and working on the Burma Railway. Davidson returned to Malaya after the war and was Joint Master in 1948 and 1951-52. This was a period of declining numbers when six was a big turnout and his willingness to regularly set runs played a considerable part in keeping the Hash going. He had a second spell as Joint Master between 1955-57 and recorded his last run in 1960. Davidson returned to farming in Shropshire where he entertained many visiting hashers. Mike ‘Dayak’ Callaghan has a hash pedigree going back to the late 1960’s when he completed a handful of runs in Singapore. He became a founder member of the Johore Bahru H3, staying on for some 30 runs before heading for Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. By the early nineties he was back in Malaysia, clocking up 700 plus runs with Kuching H3, Kuching City and Kuching Harriettes. He also had a spell as GM of Kuching H3. Around 1993, Dayak headed to Laos, where he has been one of the central figures in the development of Hashing in this beautiful Southeast Asian backwater. His Laos record includes 500 plus runs with Vientiane H3, where he was GM in 1995 and 2003. He was also co -founder and GM of the Bush Hash and trail master for the 8th Indochina-Mekong Hash in 2005. |

There have been a surprising number of deaths on trail and as heart attacks are the most common cause we can probably expect these to increase as we all get older together. Most notably hash legend Wolf collapsed and died while on a Frankfurt trail. Deaths from other illness are rare but in 2004, Billy Palinski, a popular young student at Earlham Collage was running with the college hash group when he died as a result of his spleen bursting. It appears that Billy had been suffering from mononucleosis at the time and probably should not have been exercising. Nepal H3 have lost one visiting hasher to altitude sickness and have come close to repeating the feat on at least one other occasion. It is believed that Evil C died of a tropical illness contracted while hashing in Malaysia. Drowning is another danger, but this is more likely to occur after the actual run as the drink kicks in. Tim Carter, killed crossing a busy road is a relatively rare occurrence of a fatal motor accident on trail and you far more likely to be killed driving to or from the Hash. Dynamite and Pe Deep Throat Chantong are amongst distinguished Hashers to have been taken from us in this way. The most tragic accident to strike one Hash was run 1008 of the Ikeja Hash, when three Hashers were killed and several others seriously injured. (See Ikeja run 1008). A disaster of equal portions was only narrowly avoided when a minibus carrying the Tasmanian InterHash committee overturned. (See InterHash –Tasmania) Although crime is a problem in many parts of the world there is only one recorded case of a hasher being murdered on trail. There was some suggestion that the victim was involved in dubious practises outside of hashing and this was not a random attack. The nearest we have come to multi-deaths on trail was when Casuarina had ten runners thrown off their feet by a lightening strike in January 1988. There were fortunately no fatalities, but several runners had to be hospitalised with burns. Near misses are far too numerous to be mentioned but certainly include the night Frankie 'Flakey Frankey' Jolley, fell into a monsoon drain while running with Singapore's Lion City Hash (he was eventually spat out into the river after having been underwater for way too long to be good for his health ) and 'Dances with Tram's' name inspiring collision with a Munich tram.

Denmark Considering there are only about 1.7 million of them, Danes tend to pop up as ex-pats just about everywhere you go. In addition-one of the countries top tourist’s sites is a brewery. There should therefore be more hashing in Denmark than there is. Copenhagen H3 ‘The Viking Wankers’ were founded by Kaj 'Der Tulip Eater' Pedersen, Poul-Erik Dam and Steffen Harpoth in March 1980. They meet on Monday’s during summer and weekends during winters. Runs are ‘in and around Copenhagen’ with probably half of them in town. Packs can range from 20 to 60.
They are an extremely well organised and ceremonial group with a
passion for their famous hash banner, medals handed out to
runners at regular landmarks, an active program of extra events
(they claim to be the 2nd kennel in the world to
stage a skydiving hash) and an awe-inspiring Hash History that
is available on line. Jen ‘Father Abrham’ Falkenbus has
done over a 1000 runs with ‘Old Bailey’ and ‘ThirStig’
on 800 plus. Århus H3 was founded in May 1989 by Jesper ‘Sucker’ Andersen. Pack varies between 10 and 30, with numbers usually depending on the weather. Odense-Nyborg H3 was founded by Phillip ‘Wankless’ Smallboy in June 1990. Michael ‘Witch Doctor’ Jorgensen and Kurt ‘Smelly Belly’ Hansen and are on 400 plus runs. The existence of others Danish kennels is somewhat doubtful. Esbjerg H3 was found in 1985 and at one point attracted packs of 20. However the kennel depended on the enthusiasm of founder ‘Big Jim’ Carr and folded when he left. Aalborg H3, founded in 1983, was always small and only run irregularly and Lyngby H3 has also folded. One new addition is the North Sea H3 an all men Hash that has been running since 1998. |

Hashes. Quotations,
facts and Phrases. In 2008 Webster’s Dictionary published a 32 page booklet entitled Hashes. Quotations, facts and Phrases. The Hash House Harries get a reasonable and accurate (if hardly in-depth) mention. There are also some interesting sidelines. For example Hash House Harriers were not the first to use the term Hash Bash. Ann Arbor, Michigan, have been holding such an event since 1972, when they celebrated the release of activist John Sinclair who had been jailed for possession of a tiny amount of marijuana. |

Eric ‘Digit’ McGaw started hashing in Brunei with Kuala Belait in1980. As he worked off shore he only managed a handful of runs, but it meant when posted to Manila and hearing a squash partner mention ‘hashing’ he knew what it was all about and went along.
He spent 8 happy years in Manila and although rowing
was his first love he started to build up what was to become a legendry
hash career. He was often scribe, became a regular roving co On arriving in Hyderabad in 1989 Digit immediately started to found a kennel, the 7-8 month delay between conception and the first run being due to a problem finding t-shirts. Digit was to hash in India for the next decade and a half, during which time he became one of only two hashers to attend every Indian Nash Hash. He was also a regular at InterHash, including being register #2 for Rotorua. Digit did not think up the idea of bringing InterHash to India, but led the presentation and went on to become chairman. Indeed few InterHash chairmen have imposed themselves on an event as much as Digit did that year. Digit is a purist who believes hashing belongs, in ‘third-world shitholes, especially Asia’. The name, by the way, comes from losing one by falling off an Indian train en route to a hash. DickheadRichard ‘Dickhead’ Hughes completed 1000 runs with Hobart Hash in 1999.

Dildo DanDan ‘Dildo Dan’ Smith was introduced to hashing in Dar es Salaam in 1999 and made a major contribution to the golden period of the Dar Hash with his enthusiasm, simple nature (proof of this being that his second hobby in life after hashing is supporting the mighty Chester City FC) and intriguing love life. His work as a road engineer enabled several weekend events to take place at the SkanPihl Colas Road Camp some 100 k out of town. These included a legendary joint run with the local Maasi village, featuring flooded rivers, a check in the middle of a cow pen and down-downs of warm cow blood mixed with milk. Dildo moved on in 2002, founding Curacao H3, followed by spells with Yaounde H3, Jamaica H3 and more recently the Middle East.

Regular canine runners have graced several Hashes. There is always a danger they will try to fight, or mate with other dogs on trail, but then again the same could be said for the average RA. The habit of referring to the original Club House as ‘The Spotted Dog’ has produced a link between hashing and Dalmatians, although the Dalmatian in question belonged to the police chief’s wife and neither she, nor her hound, were hashers. The first hash dog was therefore probably Belong, a bull terrier running with KL in 1940.
Legendary dogs since then have included Hyderabad’s
beloved Samson, now gone on to greener hashing pastures after
nearly 400 runs. Most famous current hasher with a dog is John Duncan,
whose occasional hash runs are always in the company of his two spotted
Do Stockholm Hash had a Malidog, which has a remarkable resemblance to Hash legend Malibog. Also worth a mention is unnamed dog of Belfast H3 who humped somebody in the circle during their hash christening (see their website!). Perth H3 once had a dog called Penny who 'was mistaken for a wombat and, showing extraordinary perception, abandoned her owner, Fido'. Perth also opened the position of Dog Bearer when a new hasher, expecting to get a beer, asked if there was a initiation ceremony and was made to carry a 90lb vicious dog around the circle.. Following a career in the Royal Signals, Fred ‘Doormat’ Roissetter went to work for Her Majesties Diplomatic Service. This has allowed him to spend the last decade in the east Mediterranean, during which he hashed with Athens and then Ankara. His 2007 transfer to Istanbul brought the following message from his old kennel - ‘pleased to see our reject, Doormat, has been adopted by the Istanbul Hash. The transfer should help improve the average IQ of both kennels.’ Despite that warning Doormat was GM elect within weeks of his arrive in Istanbul and since then has brought a military efficiency to the role. His hash handle came from the speed his son was conceived after Doormat returned from a spell of overseas duty, the hash believing he and wife ‘Plonker’ must have shagged on the doormat to achieve such rapid results. The central part of the circle
ritual, the downing of a beer in a single non-stop moment with any
liquid left in the vessel at the end being poured on your head Historically down-downs descended from drinking toasts, which can in turn be traced back to ancient times. In hash terms they probably descended directly from the Chinese toasting ritual of ‘Gan bei’.

Another qualification is that you are going to be able to use public transport in strange places without panicking as the DRIFTERS pride themselves on getting around Europe as cheaply as possibly (more Euros for beer). Duncan, John M.John Duncan is a hashing gentleman of the highest order and has three claims to fame, any of which would earn him a place in any Hash Hall of Fame. He started hashing with Mother Hash in January 1961 and was still setting trails in 2004, which is the longest spell of non-stop hashing ever recorded. Secondly it has been his research through the Malaysian records that has laid the foundation of our contemporary understanding of hashing. Thirdly it was Duncan who, in Hong Kong in 1978, agreed to bring the next InterHash to KL and it was these discussions that established the biannual nature of the event.

DynamiteCharlie ‘Dynamite’ Chandran started hashing in 1992 and for the next decade ran regularly with six Malaysian kennels, although he will always be particularly linked with the Mother Hash. In his first year he became one of the founders of the Merdeka Run, and his energy and enthusiasm earned him the handle ‘Dynamite’. He became Mother Hash On-Sec in 1998, arguably the premier position in Hashdom, and even more so as this was the year Mother Hash hosted its second InterHash. Dynamite acted as Master of Ceremonies at the InterHash cabaret, a position he filled again in Goa. Dynamite was killed in a road accident in October 2002, soon after returning home from Goa InterHash. There is a memorial run in his honour each year. On on Dynamite |
