About the hashpaedia

1st 1992 Paris

Paris staged the first EuroHash in 1992 and it was a magnificent success, attracting 1000 runners with the short distance to the French capital resulting in a notable English contingent.

Friday started with a short run, then a metro trip and pub-crawl of the Latin Quarter. By midnight it was champagne under the Eiffel Tower.

Saturday gave a choice of venues and brilliant on-on in at ‘The Winter Circus’, where the Paris Harriettes cancan girls producing one of the all time great hash cabaret acts.  Things finished on Sunday with a tour of central Paris including making a dash through several shopping arcades.

1992 had been very much a Paris idea, and possibly a one-off event, but a meeting of GM’s voted to do it again the following year.

2nd 1993 Madrid

The original idea of bringing EuroHash to Spain probably came from Ding-Dong Bell with  Euroman also playing a key role.

Things kicked off on the Thursday with  the Bangkok ‘Thinking Drinking Hash setting an excellent trail in Casade Park. Madrid is a surprisingly hilly city and several of the runs took advantage of the surrounding heights.

The Saturday on on venue was a bullring  where real - if young - bulls were produced. Rambo (London) and the Scandihooligans seemed to particularly enjoy these encounters. There was also a drinking contest, where Hooray Henry added to his titles. Most hashers were staying on camp sites and there was the expected  moving of tents and other such pranks.

Despite the success nobody came forward  to host in 1993 and suggestions of combining it with UK Nash Hash was declined by the English contingent. Many Hashers joined a post Hash bus tour, which included a run inside the rock of Gibraltar.

3rd 1994 GermanyUpdated

In 1994 a EuroHash was staged in Germany by Stray Dog. Many hashers feel this was a renegade event that should be considered ‘unofficial’. In reflection that is probably a harsh point of view, not reflecting the situation at the time. Hashers had left Madrid with no future venue decided and a general feeling that EuroHash should now switch to every two years. However no firm decision had been taken on this matter and the German event fits into the general relaxed mismanagement of EuroHash at the time.
Perhaps because it was the third event in three years, or perhaps because of the late notice, numbers were down .Once again the pack departed without deciding on the next venue and there was a feeling that this might be the third and last EuroHash.

 4th 1995 Zagreb Updated

Zagreb H3 finally came forward to host as part of their 1000th run celebration and selected the island of Hvar as the venue. With the Balkans having a few minor problems (bombs, landmines, wars) and a general lack of advertising numbers were down to around 50 but the 4th EuroHash proved a great success.
The venue was a hotel that was specially opened for the event, the island provided a perfect backcloth of sea, countryside and friendly villages and the small number of hashers resulted in a close bonding between those who did turn up.

There was pressure on the UK to host the next event but hashers once again departed unsure of where, when, or if, they would be meeting again.

5th 1997 Brussels Updated

After some delay Higgins came forward to offer Belgium as a somewhat dubious venue. Wasn’t Belgium boring? And expensive? Hadn’t Monty Python taken the piss out of them? Yes to all those. Yet, thanks to the enthusiasm of the organiser and the brilliant Belgium beer 1997 was a magnificent success that put EuroHash onto a firm footing for the first time.

With amazing intelligence for a man who has drunk so much beer during a single lifetime, Higgins opted to host in 1997, thus putting EuroHash onto a two year circle that did not conflict with InterHash. It also gave Higgins time to drink his way around Europe drumming up enthusiasm for the event and in the end 600 plus hashers turned up.

The university campus 12k out of town was perfect and The F.U.K. Full Moon warmed things up with their 100th Run. The main day produced two legendary trails, the run around the Waterloo Battlefield and the city trail, during which the Manneke Pis statue was dressed in a hash t shirt and produced beer! (The statue had in fact been converted to take kegs for an early beer festive.)

The Waterloo run attracted considerable attention with 300 or so hashers wanting to take part. This was clearly because of the historical connection rather than the countryside - which tends to be a bit flat and boring around here – ideal for fighting a battle but not so good for hashing. As a result Higgins spent the morning rearranging buses, diverting beer and warning the hare that he might have 300 in the circle. With all the buses full, the last 2 runners were sent out to the venue in the beer truck.

The evening produced some excellent cabaret acts, including the Surrey Harriettes impersonation of the Spice Girls.

Brussels was certainly a turning point, the pack went away with the 1999 venue already settled and from having trouble finding hosts, EuroHash would soon enjoy competitive bidding.

6th 1999 Cappadocia

The Turkish kennels came together to stage EuroHash 1999 amongst the unique rock landscape of Cappadocia (which is actually in Asia, not Europe). There were problems with bureaucracy, which delayed payment, but the 5 star accommodation was great value.

7th 2001 Frankfurt

Frankfurt and ‘The Wolf’ offered lager, barques and a fondly remembered torchlight run. Some reports suggest that the partying was a bit dull with a few of the pack slipping away into town.

8th 2003 Århus

The Danes produced a combination of camping, games, cabins and Viking helmets.

9th 2005 Amsterdam

DIVA H3 got the long weekend off to a great start with a Red Light Red Dress Run, then it was out to the 13th century Castle Assumburg in Heemskerk. In addition to hashing there was jousting and tug of war.

10th 2007 - Kingston

Friday 13th hash sets off through Kingston                              London H3 banner on opening night

Kingston was a beautiful venue and the weather perfect – in fact edging towards a little  too hot. Accommodation at the University was comfortable and the food was adequate to good. Pete the Pilot had arranged some classy beer and the supply never run out. The only complaint perhaps was that the Saturday band didn’t adjust to the mood of the audience and the action was much better with the DJ.

Guernsey Harriettes attracted a lot of attention on the opening afternoon and The Friday 13th Run was a great start to the week, with some of the UK’s best known hashers doing the honours.

The Saturday runs produced an interesting range of events, one of which departed by double decker bus. The Ballbreaker Run was exactly that, partly because on the home stretch the hares got completely lost (they tried to hide behind a tree while discussing the situation!) The walkers trail in central London had problems with parking and had to make a wild sprint before the bus got towed away! However all this only added to the excitement and it was a good day’s hashing.

Sunday saw a very attractive run from Hampton Court and back to the venue. Some groups departed by boat and run back, some run out and returned by boat and some went both ways by boat, which was not actually in the plan. For those who did the long trail it was quite a tough Hare of the Dog Run.

The weather broke half way through the closing circle and the hashers went under the marquee, not perhaps the wisest choice with the lightening close by but all survived!

Trigamist was GM and Urine an impressive worker behind the scenes.

Voting for 2009

Sunday morning  saw a vote between Aarhus and Antayla for 2009. Both gave short and entertaining bids but the winning factor was camping (Denmark) or 5 Star Hotel (Turkey).

11th 2009 - Antalya

Five hundred and fifty hashers from 36 countries turned up for EuroHash '09 and they all enjoyed limitless free beer throughout the weekend.  Heavy rainfall on the opening morning caused the committee to relocate the Wellcum Party from an open air disco on the beach to a disco hall that was not particularly large.

Saturday's trails were of a high standard with the mountainous surrounding area offering a great range of sites from canyons to pine forests. Particular praise went to the Ankara H3 run, which went through oceans of wild flowers. The runs were followed by some good circles.

Saturday night saw a Red Party with both live and DJ music. Hosts for the evening’s Red Party, were Bush Affair from Antalya Hash House Harriers and G-Spot from Ankara and Antalya Hash provided an impressive hash band.

During the party Stockholm, with a Baltic cruise, and Hague with a castle based hash, made their bids for 2011. Hague’s presentation was very professional and the bidding – decided by the volume of the cheers from the audience - was never in dispute. 2011 will be on-on to Holland.

The hang-over run was mostly along the sandy beaches  The committee admitted a few mistakes – times in the program were not always correct and some of the hotels did not reach the 5 star level they claimed,  but generally the committee led by Doc and Breezy put on a good show.
